Re-trace your steps
The first thing to do is to retrace your steps. If you’re in the house then look in all the places you’ve been. Don’t forget to look down the sides of the sofa and even by the loo and in the fridge. It’s surprising where you place things when you’re not thinking.

Contact anywhere you think you may have left them
If you’ve been to a friend’s house or just been out with a friend contact them – they might have picked up the wrong keys and put them in their bag by mistake. Contact any shops you may have dropped them in.

Contact lost property offices and local police stations
It is notoriously difficult for police stations & lost property offices to re-unite you with your keys so the sooner you contact them the better as the keys should be easier to match. Keep checking in with them as they are unlikely to call you back if keys are handed in later.

Contact supermarkets
If you had a supermarket keyring (such as Tesco Clubcard) it may be worth ringing them to see if anyone’s handed them in there.

Consider any security risks
Where did you lose your keys? An annoying question we know, but if you lost them outside of your house is there any potential security risk. Could the keys have been stolen? If your keys were found or stolen, could the person responsible know where the keys could be used, eg. where you live or which vehicle you own? If so it may be worth contacting the police and also considering getting locks changed (see our locksmith directory). If any work keys or any other person’s keys were lost it is your responsibility to inform your workplace or the owner. Losing your keys can be a costly error.
