Frequently Asked Questions*
- How much does Lostakey’s key cover cost?
Each key fob is £5/year. If you pay by standing order or set up a recurrent Paypal payment (Paypal Yearly) you get the first year free of charge.
- Do people really phone up when they’ve found keys?
You’d be surprised how honest people are – the majority of people really do want to help & we get many calls about found keys.
- How does it work?
If your keys are reported found, we contact you with the finder’s details so that you can arrange to get them back. We pay the finder’s reward.
- Can the finder put them in a post box?
No – we tell the finder to hold on to the keys so that you can arrange to get them back. This normally reduces the time for you to get them back, rather than waiting for them to be posted to us and then on to you. Often you have only just lost them so you can go & pick them up immediately.
- What happens if my keys are not found?
If you keys are not found there is nothing we can do – we do not offer any insurance, replacement keys, etc. Our locksmith directory may be of help. We can send a replacement keyring for your new keys (to replace the lost keyring).
- What is the reward?
If the key cover is valid the reward is a free membership to Lostakey.
- How quickly are the keyrings delivered?
We aim to dispatch key cover orders within 24hrs. They are sent by Royal Mail First Class post.
- Is your service secure?
We never give out your details. We give you the contact details for the finder of your keys & always recommend you dial 141 before you make the call so that your phone number is withheld.
- How can I change my details?
You can change your details by logging in to our website or contact us and we’ll change them for you.
- I wanted to buy your Special Offer 4 for the price of 3. Can I give your key cover to a friend?
Yes – we will register all the key fobs under your details but you can log in or contact us and change the details of any of your keyrings.
- How do I get a replacement keyring?
Contact us and we will send a replacement. It will have a different membership number on it so we will amend this on your details and your old keyring will be cancelled.
- I contacted you about some keys I found but I can’t remember what I was told would happen next.
If the keys are registered with us we will try to get in touch with the owner immediately so they should contact you shortly. Assuming they were registered we will send you a reward. Please see the next question for if the keys are not registered with us.
- I found some keys but they haven’t been registered with you. What should I do with them?
If the keys were registered with us we would have tried to contact the owner immediately. If they are not registered we ask you to hold on to them for a couple of days in case the owner gets in touch with us. Following that you can try taking them to your local police station, but many police stations will no longer accept keys.
- Can I get the keyrings branded with my company logo for use as promotional keyrings?
Sadly we are not currently offering branded keyrings.
- Can I buy your keyrings for retail?
Yes – we do sell our key cover for retail. Please see our ‘For Business‘ page for more information.
- Your key cover seems very cheap. How do you make money?
We are a small company and keep costs down where possible. However, our keyrings are high quality and we are very proud of our customer service. Most customers renew their memberships annually and recommend us to friends.
- How long have you been running the service?
Lostakey was established in 2009 and its customer base continues to grow year on year.
- Is there any chance your service will stop because of the new apps and technology to help find keys?
No – we have not seen any decline in sales despite the new apps. It seems many people think that modern technology does have flaws, such as not having signal on your phone to use the app to find your keys or walking round in circles trying to hunt them down. The traditional method of someone handing your keys back to you or posting them to you is often though to be much easier and much more reliable – and cheap!
- Is ‘keyrings’ the correct name?
No! The correct term is actually ‘key fobs’ but we found this confused people and most people look for ‘keyrings’ when they search on the internet. ‘Keyrings’ are actually the split ring you use to attach the key fob to your keys! And yes – we do supply one of those too!
- Do you pass on my details to third parties?
No – we do not pass on any of your details.
- Do you send me a lot of emails?
No – we may email you if your keys are found and we can’t contact you by phone. We will email to notify you if your membership is expiring. Other than that we may email one or two times a year – for example at Christmas.
- How do I cancel my membership?
Please contact us to cancel your membership. All automatic payments such as standing orders and Paypal MUST be cancelled by yourself. We cannot do this for you. We do not give any refunds for payments which have already been taken.
